Similar to the dormer conversion, L-shaped dormers are a great way of maximising the room in your loft and opening it up to create more usable space. They can be fitted onto properties that are already in an L shape, usually terraced houses, giving a whole new floor with space for several additional rooms. You might also hear them being referred to as outrigger loft conversions.

Structurally, an L-shaped conversion is very similar to a dormer conversion – it is just built onto a property that is a different shape. In order for your property to work with one of these loft conversions, you will usually need to have had an extension at the back to create the right shape. The extension itself will then be built out of the existing roof, on top of the property and the extension, with flat walls and ceiling.
